Tourist Numbers Down in Cuu Long but Region Prepares to Recuperate after Covid-19 Outbreak Is Over

The Cuu Long Region (the Mekong Delta region), Vietnam, reports the decrease of visitors compared to the same period of the previous year attributed to the general slow-down in tourism industry due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The figures of Can Tho City’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism show that Tet, or the Lunar New Year, was still quite busy with 813,000 visitors to the city, 4.5 percent up on year-to-year bases; but regarless of this, January and February in general saw a decrease in tourist numbers.

Local tour agencies complain of tours to and from Can Tho being cancelled. It is expected that tourist arrivals will fall even further, most probably by 50 percent.

Yet the authorities jump at the opportunity to use the period of relative quietness to upgrade tourist facilities in the city, develop new tour programs, introduce new attractions and train staff to increase the overall performance of the hospitality sector in the region.

Tourism agencies, hotels and restaurants are getting ready to the re-launch after the virus outbreak is over and are currently preparing promotion plans, discount programs, and new tourism products.

An Giang Province as well as Kien Giang Province, home to the popular resort island of Phu Quoc, are facing challenges, too, but still remain optimistic about 2020's perspective.
