Sihanoukville to Become Cambodia's Industrial Hub

Sihanoukville in Cambodia will be transformed into the country's industrial hub and a multi-purpose economic zone, as per the recently revealed plans of the Khmer government. Do you feel your heart breaking on hearing the news?

Sihanoukville, Cambodia's prime seaside resort destination, will be revamped to be a 'second Shenzhen city'. Boasting all the necessary facilities for becoming a major economic hub and a vital base for exports, including an international airport, a railway line to Phnom Penh and the Kingdom’s only deep-sea port, the city will soon reinvent itself as a special economic zone.

Over the last few years, Sihanoukville's construction sector has attracted billions of – mostly Chinese – dollars in investment with casino industry booming until the last year's ban on online gambling. Slowing down of gambling activity lead to massive exodus of Chinese developers, staff and tourists with the formerly jolly seaside city left littered with skeletons of unfinished high-rise buildings.

To revive the now-oh-so-quiet provincial capital, the government is currently working on infrastructure reconstruction projects in the province. According to the master plan, Sihanoukville will become a special economic zone and an industrial city similar to China’s Shenzhen. The Urban Planning and Design Institute of Shenzhen was commissioned to map out the respective master plan.
