Mountain-Moon Bridge to Enhance Visitors' Experience in Taroko NP, Taiwan

Taiwan’s famous Taroko Gorge National Park in Taichung Municipality, Nantou County, and Hualien County will get a new impressive Mountain-Moon Bridge scheduled to open in the second half of 2020.

The 196-metre long suspension bridge will span over a deep canyon carved by the Liwu River connecting its steep slopes. The challenging project has taken almost three years to be completed. When open, it will offer visitors to enhance their experience from the park by walking along a barrier-free sightseeing footpath which is currently under construction.

The first bridge over Taroko Gorge was built back during the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). At the time of the construction it was the longest suspension bridge in the Taroko Canyon. Later, due to the damages caused by a gold mining road in 1940-41, the bridge was demolished.

Taroko National Park's authorities decided to re-build the bridge to provide visitors with an access to the vast hinterland of the park.

The new Mountain-Moon Bridge will straddle the Liwu River and lead to Bulouwan. Works on site started in August 2016 and were completed in May 2019, yet the bridge is still waiting for the official opening scheduled for the second half of this year.
