Char Narayan Temple in Nepal Restored After 2015's Earthquake

Char Narayan Temple, one of the oldest temples in Patan Durbar Square, Kathmandu Valley, which collapsed completely during the 2015's earthquake, has been restored to its former grandeur.

One of the finest examples of Newari architecture, the temple dates back to the 16th century. The temple is dedicated to Narayan, one of Vishnu's manefestations, and unlike other temples in Patan, is made of brick mostly.

Resoration works were carried out by the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust with the support provided by the United States Embassy, through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) in the first turn as well as by the World Monument Fund (WMF), the Japanese Embassy, the German Embassy, and the South Asia Institute – Heidelberg.

While the structure did collapse, some of its original fragments were salvaged and preserved. These included historic carved door and window frames, which have been recently reassembled to their original places.

Char Narayan Temple has become the twenty-fourth project in Nepal to have received funding for restoration from AFCP. Since 2003, the Fund has participated in restoration of other historic monuments in Patan – the Palace, Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk, and 17th-century water architectures to name just a few.
