The national park includes two volcanoes – Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango – hence the name. The total area of the park is about 150 square km. While the park was established in 1980 to unite the already existing conservation areas, earlier in 1977 the UNESCO declared the region part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The park has four entry points for visitors, three of which – the Cibodas, Gunung Putri, and Selabintana gates – provide access to the peaks of the volcanoes; the fourth entry point known as the Situ Gunung gate gives access to the lake area popular with picnicking families and groups of friends. The headquarters of the park are located at the Cibodas gate which is also the most popular entrance point to the park.
Visitors come to Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park for hiking and trekking as well as enjoying its varied flora and fauna: the Gunung Gede-Pangrango NP is inhabited by 251 of the 450 bird species found in Java.
The closure period falls on the low season when hiking is risky. During this time, the park rangers will restore trails and renovate tourist facilities.

Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) in West Java will close for a regular maintenance from December 31 this year to March 31, 2020. The annual closure is aimed at allowing the mountains' ecosystem to restore.
