Taiwan Railway Bento Boxes to Be Served as In-Flight Food

Taiwan Railway bento boxes will be served as in-flight meals on board of several airlines starting from the next year.

Taiwan Railway bento boxes enjoy great popularity in Taiwan. They are essentially a combo lunch of rice, meat chops, and a variety of Taiwanese-style side dishes. Prepared by the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA), such bento boxes is an indispensable part of the local gastronomic scene. Priced between USD2-USD4 per box and sold at major railway stations and on trains, they have already secured their place as a signature specialty in an everyday life of the Taiwanese.

In a bid to expand business, the TRA's catering division is going to franchise out their famous lunch box service. Kaohsiung Airport Catering Services, China Pacific Catering Services, and TransAsia Catering Services among other companies have already shown their interest in franchise operations. All the above mentioned companies service both domestic and international airlines.

By the next year, the TRA promises to settle franchise fees, food preparation procedures, price setting, package design, and other details.

The TRA further reports that since 2016, over 10 million Taiwan Railway bento boxes are sold every year. 90 percent of all boxes sold is the pork chop meal.
