Taiwan's High-Speed Rail Extention to Link Kaohsiung to Pingtung

A new high-speed rail route in Taiwan set to open by the end of 2029 will link Kaohsiung to Pingtung without cutting through the centre of Taiwan’s largest southern city and the airport, the Ministry of Transportation confirmed in the end of the last weel.

Currently, the country’s only high-speed rail line runs between Taipei City’s Nangang District in the north and Kaohsiung City’s Zuoying District in the south. The much anticipated extension to Pingtung is now has been confirmed by the government.

While four different routes were discussed, the route to Pingtung City’s Liukuaicuo Station was chosen among all. It will start at the existing Zuoying terminal station and head north along the elevated track and then turn east, the total length of the new route being 17.5 km. The estimated cost of the extention is USD1.78 billion.

Other options discussed included an elevated line from the Qiaotou science park to Liukuaicuo; an underground line passing through the centre of Kaohsiung with a new station in the city; a south-east route with a stop at the city’s Xiaogang International Airport terminating in the Pingtung County township of Chaozhou.
