New Design Manhole Covers in Bangkok to Become Tourist Attraction

Not only graffiti – while many Thai cities and towns adorn the walls of their buildings with graffiti works to create new tourist attractions, some of Bangkok's neighbourhoods will use manhole covers instead.

The City Planning Office of City Hall has decided to introduce a new design of manhole covers that will not only perform their usual function but become part of Bangkok's new look.

New manhole covers will feature a unique colourful and beautiful design. The first neighbourhood to install new manhole covers will be Khlong Ong Ang in the old town area of Bangkok. The neighbourhood has been given a face-lift recently and bright manhole covers will add glitter to the area which looks much cleaner and fresher after the garbage-strewn canal were unclogged and all the make-shift canal-side shops removed.

According to researchers with the public sculpture design and public participation project, the new manhole covers will help enhance the identity of communities. The new Instagrammable manhole covers will beautify the sidewalks along Khlong Ong Ang and possibly attract visitors as it is often the case with graffiti.

Besides Khlong Ong Ang, new differently designed manhole covers will appear on the Yaowaraj Road in the China Town area, and along the route of the Blue Line electric train.
