Kampot to Get Food Street

Kampot is going to become the first province in Cambodia to feature a ‘Food Street’, an area totally dedicated to shops and stalls with local delicacies. It is part of  a government scheme for promoting tourism across the country.

A lot of Khmer cuisine is not all that different from what you can find in the rest of Southeast Asia. Many of the dishes are influenced by, or have drawn from, the dishes of surrounding countries. However, notably, Cambodian food is less spicy than the dishes found in its neighbouring countries. Coriander and lemongrass are examples of regularly used herbs that lend themselves to a gentle and well-balanced dish.

In a bid to attract more tourists and enhance their travel experience the government is sponsoring a country-wide program to provide tourists with high-quality and hygienic local dishes. ‘Food Street’ is part of the project and Kampot is chosen to become the first province in the country to get its own Food Street ahead of Sea Festival that will be held in December.

The festival prompted to choose Kampot as a model for the scheme as it is one of the most important tourist events of the calendar. This year the festival will be held for the 8th time. The festival is expected to draw about half a million visitors to Kampot – almost the same number of visitors that the province welcomed during the six months of this year. Out of the total number, about 57,000 tourists were foreigners.
