Three-Day Railway Passes to Be Offered to Foreign Visitors during 2020 Olympics

Foreign visitors attending the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo the next year will be offered three-day railway passes.

East Japan Railway Co. and 25 other railway operators in the Kanto area announced they will introduce special three-day railway passes for freign nationals visiting Tokyo during the Olympic and Paralympic Games the next year.

Passes will be valid for three days in a fow and include an unlimited number of train rides operated by any of the 26 companies participating in the campaign. Three-day passes can be used strictly between July 22 and August 9, 2020 for the Olympics and between August 25 and September 6, 2020 – for the Paralympics.

The special Olympic Games train passes are expected to be on sale the next year from mid-July to early September. Users of JR East’s Suica smart card and the Pasmo electronic money card, adopted by dozens of railway and bus operators, will be able to add passes to their list of servces available.

The 2020 Summer Olympics will be held the next year from July, 24 till August, 9 in Tokyo, Japan. It will be the second time Tokyo hosts the Olympics making it the first city in Asia to welcome the Olympics twice – in 1964 and in 2020. Other two Japanese cities to host the Olympics besides Tokyo are Sapporo and Nagano. They both became the stage for the Winter Olympic Games in 1972 and 1998 respectively.
