Sri Lanka Eyes Reviving Visa on Arrival Scheme

Visa-on-arrival policy that was introduced earlier this year to encourage tourists to visit Sri Lanka during the monsoon period and eventually put on a hold after the Easter attacks may be revived starting from August, 1.

Currently, the government of Sri Lanka eyes the possibility of reviving the visa-on-arrival option for nationals of 39 countries excluding though citizens of India and China who were among the main Sri Lankan tourists source market lately.

The Tourism Development Minister joined hands with the Department of Immigration and Emigration to submit the respective proposal to the Sri Lankan Cabinet. Besides revival of the visa-on-arrival scheme, visa-free entry is also discussed.

It is supposed that initially the program will be launched for a trial period of six months. If the trial period proves to be a success, the list of the countries eligible for visa on arrival will be expanded and will include India and China.

At the same time, the Sri Lankan government will introduce a powerful monitoring system for all travellers entering the country. It is expected that the new system will put a secure barrier preventing criminals and troublemakers from entering the country.
