The area around the northwestern part of Leyte and Biliran provincies endowed with natural wonders and access and connectivity are of crucial importance for the tourism sector there. A new Ormoc City airport can handle wider aircraft what means improved connectivity for the whole region.
Before, to visit Eastern Visayas the majority of tourists had to use the Tacloban airport as their main gateway to the region. The most popular and famous attractions in Leyte Island are located in the Northwest Leyte Tourism Corridor. They include Lake Danao, Tongonan Hot Spring and Alto Peak in Ormoc City; Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, the most visited destination in the Eastern Visayas region, Leyte; Cuatro Islas in the towns of Inopacan and Hindang, Leyte; and Sambawan Island in Maripipi, Biliran. To reach these destinations in northwestern Leyte from Tacloban, travellers had to spend between two and four hours what in fact quite tiresome and inconvenient.
The new airport will provide tourists with a long waited for and welcome alternative. The terminal building is already completed, yet works on widening the runway are underway and are set to be finished in 2020. After the renovation the airport will be night-rated, able to manage flights at night.

Ormoc City Airport in the Philippines, that suffered major damages during Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 and the earthquake in 2017, has been given a major facelift recently. It is expected to be a big boost to the tourism sector of Northwest Leyte Tourism Corridor.
