Badaling Section of Great Wall Sets Daily Limits for Visitors

The most frequently visited Badaling section of the Great Wall in Beijing limited the number of visitors to 65,000 a day effective from June 1.

Due to a relatively quick and easy access from Beijing, the capital of China, the Badaling section of the Great Wall remains the most popular and most frequently visited section of the Wall. Located in Yanqing County, some 60 km northwest of Beijing, it is often included into the bestselling day tours from Beijing. In 2018, over 9.9 million travellers visited the Badaling section causing fears that with the number of visitors growing without control, the structure may suffer damage.

Thus effective from June, 1, only the first 65,000 visitors will be allowed to enter the Wall. Next month, a special ticketing system will be launched to control the number of tickets sold. It will encourage travellers to book their visit to the Great Wall online as early as seven days prior to the visit.

The Great Wall is not the first attraction in China that imposed daily limits for visitors. Other popular sights that set strict controls over the number of visitors are the Palace Museum and the National Museum of China, both in Beijing. Daily they accept 80,000 and 30,000 visitors respectively.
