Initially it was planned to grant 6-months VOA to Thai visitors only but the cabinet decided to include to the list other countries which have a high potential as source markets for tourism sector in Sri Lanka.

At first, new 6-months VOA will be granted in the frame of a trial period. If the practice proves successful, it will be implemented on a permanent bases. The Ministry hopes this initiative will help achieve this year's target in tourist arrivals of three million travellers.

Currently all tourists visiting Sri Lanka for sightseeing, holiday or medical treatment require a visa. Tourist visas are issued for a 30-days period. They can be applied for online prior to travel (Electronic Travel Authorization) or on arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo.
