10 Best Halal Destinations in Indonesia

The Indonesia Muslim Travel Index is based on the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI). It is the international system of ranking and evaluating countries from the point of view of their convenience and suitability for halal tourists. The ranking takes into account many factors – from availability of mosques, to halal food joints to overall attitude of the population towards Muslim visitors.

In 2018, Indonesia was ranked second in the GMTI yielding only to Malaysia. This year, the Tourism Ministry hopes to top the ranking with the ministry’s halal tourism acceleration team putting a lot of effort to make Indonesia a major global player for halal tourism, a recent trend that is growing at an incredibly high speed.

For the 2019 IMTI, 10 best halal destinations in Indonesia were selected. They are:
– Aceh in Sumatra Island, famous for beaches, diving sites and mountains;
– Riau and Riau Islands, tropical islands sitting on one of the world's busiest shipping lanes;
– West Sumatra, home to rainforests and volcanos;
– Jakarta, Indonesia's huge capital on the island of Java;
– West Java, boasting a variety of attractions – from Dutch-designed art deco buildings to volcanos;
– Central Java, a treasure box of Buddhist and Hindu heritage;
– Yogyakarta, the major centre of traditional arts and cullture and a gateway to Borobudur and Prambanan temple complexes;
– East Java, where mighty Bromo volcano is located;
– Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, a beach and surfing hotspot;
– South Sulawesi, best known for Tana Toraja region of traditional villages with elaborate funeral rituals.
