February Festivals in Laos

Three colourful festivals will take place in Laos this February. Two of them are held in the southern provinces of Savannakhet and Champasak, and one – in the northern province of Xayaboury (Sainyabuli).

On February, 5–7, Phonngam village in Atsaphon district, Savannakhet province, will host the annual Boun Kabongyay festival. The festival is dedicated to the culture of the Brou – an ethnic group of Laos which is very close to the Mountain Khmer. There will be a lot of traditional Brou dishes for tasting, people wearing traditional Brou dresses, and local artisans selling their products. The festival culminates in a festive procession of ‘kabongyay’ – a 15 metre long structure made of banana leaves.

Champassak province will come alive on February, 17–19 with Boun Vat Phou festival celebrating the most prominent and famous of all ancient temples in Laos. The three-day event is the largest festival in the southern Laos. It will feature an elephant procession, traditional dancing, concerts, and a sound and light show, not to mention monks' chanting and praying.

Elephant festival will take place in Xayaboury province from February, 20, to February, 28. 70 elephants will perform a variety of activities. There will be a beauty pageant, alms giving ceremony and baci ceremony complemented by strees fairs and cultural shows.
