Have a Perfect Bathing Escape from Tokyo – to Gunma

Less than two hours bring you from the neon glowing capital of Tokyo, Japan, to an idyllic Gunma prefecture, famous for its hot springs of which it offers quite a fair choice.

The highest amount of hot springs in the country is found in Kusatsu. Every minute around 4000 liters of sulphuric spring water is spurted out in Kusatsu onsen. Kusatsu water fields are located in the town centre and the sight of yumomi with singing and dancing local women who stir hot water with large wooden paddles is bewitching.

For mixed bathing which is not allowed in many onsens in Japan, head to Takaragawa onsen. It has stunningly picturesque open-air baths where you can bathe together with your partner or friends.

Sainokawara onsen boasts a truly enormous outdoor bath where there is enough space for one hundred guests – is your travel group that large?

If bathing with so many strangers does not sound too attractive to you, then try Hoshi Chojukan. It is primarily a remote inn located deep in the mountains. There are rather secluded outdoor baths, and needless to say, that you can have them all for yourself.

Wanna get inside? Be warned that some baths do not allow people with tattoos to enter, alas. Before entering, always check if there are respective signs on display or enquire at the entrance.
