Downtown Tokyo to Meet Its 30th Train Station

The Yamanote Line, Tokyo's loop railway line and one of the busiest and most important lines, which connects most of Tokyo's major stations and urban centres, will welcome its 30th station in 2020.

For almost 50 years, the Yamanote line have had 29 stations with the most recent one added 47 years ago, in 1971. All but two of the Yamanote Line's 29 stations are connected to other railway or underground (subway) lines. Trains on this line run 21 hours a day with a three-hour gap between 1.18 am and 4.26 am with four minute intervals all day long and 2.5 minutes during the peak hours.

A new station will be slotted between the existing Shinagawa and Tamachi Stations in the Takanawa neighborhood. It will sit about 900 m north of Shinagawa station and takes its name – Takanawa Gateway – from the neighbourhood. Public opinion polls have been conducted before making the final dicision on the name of the station. Other suggested variants include 'Shin Shinagawa' and "Space Station'.

The new station will be fully operational by the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2020 thought construction works on the facility will go on till 2024.
