More Charter Flights Planned between Europe and Sri Lanka

Three new airlines introduce new flights or recommence flights to Sri Lanka from Europe increasing connectivity and boosting inbound tourism in the country. They are TUI, Edelweiss and Aeroflot.

The TUI Group's airline, TUI Poland, expands presence in Sri Lankan market with their first seasonal charter landed on November, 7, with over 190 passengers on board. There will be from two to three monthly flights during the winter season between now and the end of March every 11 days. TUI UK, operating from London, has already scheduled one weekly flight from November till April.

Edelweiss, Switzerland’s leading leisure airline, will operate more flights between Zurich and Colombo. Their first winter flight arrived on November, 4 with two monthly scheduled arrivals till May 2019. The airline has already announced their plans for 2019-2020 winter season when they will fly between Zurich and Colombo from October to April.

Aeroflot, the flag carrier of Russia, recommences their flights to Colombo after a decade long hiatus. Their first flight landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport on October, 29. It will be a regular service with five weekly flights between Russia and Sri Lanka (no flights on Wednesaday and Thursday) with the state-of-the-art Airbus A330 aircraft.

In the meantime, the tourist arrivals are up in Sri Lanka, both on year-to-year bases and compared to the previous month. It is 10.6% rise vs October 2017 and 2.8% vs September 2018.
