Thai Lion Air to Launch Direct Bangkok–Colombo Flight

A Thai low-cost airline, Thai Lion Air, which is an associate of Lion Air Indonesia, is launching direct service between Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport in Thailand and Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport in Sri Lanka.

There will be daily service between the two destinations though tickets are not yet on sale. Now the only two companies offering direct tickets from Bangkok to Colombo and vice versa are national flag carriers of Thailand and Sri Lanka, Thai Airways and SriLankan Airlines. AirAsia which used to serve the route, too, stopped their service in 2013. Thus Thai Lion Air will become the only low-cost carrier on the route – at least, for a time being. Currently it is possible to fly the same route with Lion Air associates via connecting flights with the whole route taking between 10 and 16 hours. When the new service is launched, it will reduce the travel time to under three and a half hours.

BangkokColombo is the 21st international route of Thai Lion Air, the majority of which are between Thailand and a variety of Chinese destinations. Thai Lion Air also connects Thailand with India, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam; BangkokDhaka (in Bangladesh) route has been launched recently.

In 2018, Thai Lion Air which was awarded CAPA Asia Pacific Low Cost Airline of the Year.
