More Cities in China to Offer 144-Hour Visa Free Transit

From January, 1, 2019, Xianmen, Qingdao, Wuhan, Chengdu and Kunming cities in China will join the list of the Chinese destinations which offer a 144-hour visa-free transit to passport holders of 53 countries. Guangdong is likely to be the next city to implement the same scheme.

To be eligible for a 144-hour visa-free transit, it is necessary to show your valid passport, produce a fully paid connecting flight ticket to the next destination and a visa to the country of your next destination. That's it!

Currently all the cities listed above already allow foreigners of 53 nationalities to transit without visa within 72 hours and now the transit period is doubled. It is important to note that the visa-free transit allows visitors to stay only in the city of their layover without touring the country. The only exception is Qingdao – in case you are connecting via Qingdao you can visit elsewhere in Shandong Province, too.

The visa-free transit practice in China was first adopted in 2013 when 18 cities across Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang region, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Liaoning Province approved a 72-hour transit which was later extended to 144 hours (6 days).
