Mindoro to Become Prime Tuna Sport Fishing Destination

The seventh largest island in the Philippines, Mindoro has historically relied on huge fish supply for its livelihood. Now the authorities believe tuna will help boost tourism in the region attracting buffs of sport fishing.

For many Mindoro is the gateway to Pandan island and the world famous Apo Reef renowned for outstanding marine life and coral reefs. Puerto Galera, a town on the northeastern coast of Oriental Mindoro, offers a variety of sea related activities, from beach-bumming on pristine beaches rivalling those of Boracay to trekking through lush forests teaming with tropical birds and animals.

Yet there is a fair share of visitor who come to Mindoro with the only purpose – to experience tuna catching. The supply of tuna in Mindoro has increased tremendously during the last several years thanks to a change of tuna behaviour. Pelagic fishes which used to inhabit the coastal waters of Mindanao have moved to Mindoro Strait. The tuna variety that abound in the waters of Mindoro is yellow fin tuna which is considered new gold of the sea.

On Nov. 8, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro hosted the third Philippine Tuna Biggest Catch Challenge Mindoro Strait Edition.
