The first village is located in Probolinggo regency and called Ngadisari Village; while the second, Wonokitri Village, is in Pasuruan regency. While the whole area of Bromo NP is a natural habitat for edelweiss flowers, the two tourist villages will provide a rare opportunity to see these fragile looking flowers in numbers, all cultivated at the spot.
There are several varieties of edelweiss including Anaphalis Javanica, Anaphalis Visida and Anaphalis Longifolia. The former variety is sometimes called the 'eternal flower' thanks to the fact that it does not wither easily. Worldwide, edelweiss is traditionally regarded as a symbol of love which never withers. In local Tengger culture, edelweiss flowers are considered sacred and are often used in rituals and ceremonies.
The local government hope that edelweiss tourists villages will draw visitors to the area and help boost local ecomony. Besides admiring flower, there is a variety of activities on offer – from hiking and trekking to part-taking in cultural shows.
