Handicraft Festival Is On at Hanoi's Silk Village

If you are in Hanoi these days, you may want to make a quick day tour to its silk weaving village located in Van Phuc ward, Ha Dong district, where the traditional handicraft festival is on till November, 17.

Van Phuc silk village, also called Ha Dong silk village, sits 10 km southwest of Ha Noi centre along the banks of the Nhue river. The local silk weaving tradition roots back a hundred years. Van Phuc is the best developed and most famous of all the handicraft villages around Hanoi of which there are over 90. The village is renowned for its traditional silk weaving techniques and high quality products.

In 1931 the products made by local weavers were exhibited in Marseille and a year later – in Paris during the international silk fair gaining the European recognition. The silk produced in Van Phuc is characterized by very smooth and lightweight texture. Till 1988, local silk products were exported extensively to the Eastern Europe. After 1990 the geography of exports expanded considerably to include other world markets.

During the festival it is possible to buy local products, witness the process of weaving as well as participate in a variety of festive activities including traditional folk games. During the event shops and stalls remain open till 11 pm.
