Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) jointly with the Transport Ministry of Thailand are going to change the operation scheme of free buses and third-class trains in the Thai capital. In nearest future these privileges will be available only for low-income earners.
At this time Bangkok and nearby provinces are operated by 800 free buses per day on 73 routes and some free third-class trains. BMTA offers them with a view to help offset the rising cost of living for poor people and not ready to serve middle-income, wealthy commuters and foreigners.
Ministry plans to control using of free Bangkok transport by issuing bar-coded ID cards with limited number of free rides for low-income commuters. It is expected that new rules would be put into operation in next six month.
